When cooking always put the lids on pans as the food cooks quicker and uses less energy! Also, collect rain water in tubs or buckets outside and use for watering plants, the birds like to bathe in them too!

grannysue from Monticello, Kentucky writes:

I use my Folgers coffee cans since they are plastic to store sugar, flour, meal, etc. and I have provided all my family and neighbors with them to store bolts, screws, and such. My dad uses them for fishing worms. They can also be used to put baked cookies in and stored in freezer for about 6 months at a time.

Nativecarol, from Colorado Springs, Colorado writes:

Check with your cities Park and Rec Department. Ours offers free mulch at several sites around town (wood chips from tree trimming, storms, etc.) We use it around all our plants, and areas that we don’t plant grass. It makes our yard look great, saves on water usage, cuts down on weeds, helps make use of recycled materials-and it’s all free. (That is if you have access to a pick-up.)

Tifsimons from San Francisco, California writes:

Start a garden, either in your backyard or with friends/neighbors. While you may not save a ton of money at first, it gets you (and your family) out in the sunshine, doing things all day. Also, go old school. Look into canning, sewing, records and eight tracks, videos from the Goodwill...whatever floats your pre-eighties boat! Things were less expensive then but not less fun.

yarnhead51 from Staley, North Carolina writes:

I use a plastic soda bottle full of water in the toilet tank to conserve water, it can be full or half full of rocks too if you like. That much water is saved with every flush.

We had so many good ideas, I regret we can only bring you these two. But we will be adding a green tips section to feature them all. Bear with us! :) - Brian

sasha1 from Charleston, West Virginia writes:

With so many stores selling reusable shopping bags, I buy these bags to use as gift bags. They're about the same price and are actually another gift that cuts down on those plastic bags.

jenniferemanuel25 from Birmingham, England writes:

Decorate strong cardboard boxes for storage. They normally come free with new household bits and they can look really pretty. It's better than buying the plastic ones, and since they so often smash and end up at the tip... When your cardboard one dies it can then be recycled.

FreeMesa Tip: Helping Charities

Many charities and non-profits are constantly running short of basic items – animal shelters always need towels, for example. Rather than having non-profits re-request the same items every week, we have a Wish List feature on FreeMesa.org where you can find charities in your local neighborhood and see if they need anything you have just lying around the house that is currently propping up a couch or buried in a closet.

Check it out here:
